5 reasons for the Eddy Merckx Classic
1. Tested route and a challenge
On Sunday, 9th September 2018 the Eddy Merckx Classic Bike Marathon will be held for the 12th time. The 3 routes have hardly changed their course so that on the longest trail of 169 km and 2609 altitude metres, one passes 11 lakes. Also the short and middle routes of 106 km and 1593 altitude metres or the 63 km tour and 918 altitude metres take you through the Racing Bike Region SalzburgerLand Salzkammergut. Whichever of these routes you choose is your choice. With modern timing technique there is no need for route classification.
2. Fantastic scenery (to distract you from the exertion)
Not only is the Lake Fuschl the start and finish of the race but here you can cool off in the turquoise waters after your tour. A further 10 lakes make this tour an unforgettable experience through picturesque villages and undulating countryside, but also you are rewarded with a breathtaking view of Salzburg from the Gaisberg mountain. The peaks in the background and the lakes are a unique setting in the SalzburgerLand and Salzkammergut where even the experienced participators give into the slipstream in order to enjoy the scenery.
3. The cannibal and further giants of the cycling sport.
Eddy Merckx is not only the names giver of the Fuschlsee Region Bike Marathon, but he also personally takes part. The legend, or the cannibal as he was named by colleagues during his active career, cycles together with friends during his stay here as a guest in Fuschl am See. Also many other very successful participants also come to enjoy the scenery and the atmosphere of this unique biking marathon such as Maurizio Fondriest, Rob Harmeling, Franz Stocher, Laurent Brochard...
4. Charity VIP Tour
On Saturday, 8th September is the VIP tour when the most famous biker of all times, joins you on this tour. We are particularly proud that 100% of the proceeds of this tour go to the Wings of Life Fund for spinal injury research. As a souvenir, not only do you receive an autograph from Eddy Merckx, but also a limited edition tricot and a start number for the race on Sunday.
5. Complimentary Programme
For guests accompanying the bikers on Saturday there is an Old Timer Puch meeting as well as the Bike Expo at the festival venue. On Saturday and Sunday, the Bike Expo offers information on the themes of sport, health and nutrition.
