Rules of the Eddy Merckx Classic Bike Marathon

Conditions of Participation
All amateur and professional cyclists are entitled to participate in the Eddy Merckx Classic Bike Marathon.
2. Minimum Age
Participants in the Eddy Merckx Classic Bike Marathon must be at least 18 years old (deadline 09.09.2018).
Every participant is obliged to assess whether his health status warrants participation in the Eddy
Merckx Classic Bike Marathon, if necessary in consultation with a physician.
The equipment and bicycle types listed below are expressly prohibited from the middle and the long track:
· Triathlon handlebars, horns, delta handlebars
· Handlebar add-ons of all kinds
· Saddle bags
· Bottle holders behind or below the saddle
· Drinking bottles made of non-malleable materials such as glass, aluminium etc.
· Recumbent bikes of all kinds
· Unicycles of all kinds
The short track (63 kilometers) will be a RTF (tourism bicycle tour) for the first time in 2018. On this distance there will be no time keeping. Because of that on this track will be allowed all types of bikes. Important: All bikes have to be allowed to drive on the streets (StVO 1960). The organizer will check the bikes randomized before the start.
Every participant is obliged to inspect their bike to ensure it is safe to ride on the road and in traffic, especially with regard to the brakes and other safety-related components. Should technical deficiencies be pinpointed, the participant may be excluded from the Eddy Merckx Classic Bike Marathon.
The Eddy Merckx Classic Bike Marathon takes place on roads which have not been closed to traffic.
Consequently, participants in this event must comply strictly with Austria’s traffic laws (“Straßenverkehrsordnung” or StVO, 1960), as well as obey any instructions given to them by traffic police and/or race marshals.
Attention: The short track will be a RTF (tourism bicycle tour) for the first time in 2018. All rules which are mentioned in the following rules and conditions, are also valid for the short track (RTF).
Participants are obligated to avoid bunching up in groups (max. 2 participants are permitted to ride side.by-side). A close eye will be kept on the behavior of participants at roundabouts and intersections especially.
Traffic violations are taken very seriously and will be handled by the executive committee accordingly, if necessary including issuance of a traffic ticket, and will lead to disqualification of the participant by the organizer.
Particular attention must be given to:
Participants must adjust their speed to the prevailing circumstances as well as to the speeds stipulated by road signs. Prevailing circumstances include road, traffic and visibility conditions, as well as the characteristics of the bike itself.
Yielding right of way § 19 StVO 1960.
Cyclists may only ride next to one another on bike paths and residential roads, as well as on other roads with public transportation during training rides on race bikes; when riding side-by-side, riders may only use the far-right lane of the road.
The driver of a vehicle that is not a railed vehicle must allow pedestrians or wheelchair users using a designated crossing point, or clearly intending to use such a crossing point, to cross the road safely and unimpeded. To this end, the driver of such a vehicle must approach a designated crossing point at a speed which allows him to stop the vehicle before the crossing point, and must stop if circumstances dictate.
Cutting corners is prohibited.
Participants must understand and comply with light signals.
Failure to obey the rules listed above will result in the organizers disqualifying the riders in question and the incident will be reported, if circumstances dictate, to the authorities!
Other road users shall not be impeded by participants in this event – unless otherwise instructed by the executive committee. In particular, the formation of a column of escort vehicles is to be avoided.
Should legal violations by participants endanger other marathon racers or other road users, the executive committee may consider breaking off the event immediately.
Participants in the Eddy Merckx Classic Bike Marathon start in blocks of racers. All participants must ride over the transponder contact strip at the start and finish line, otherwise the time will not be recorded.
The marathon is divided into the following race divisions for the long and the short distance:
- Overall standings men (1978 - 1999)
- Overall standings men Masters (1968 - 1977)
- Overall standings men Grand Masters (1958 - 1967)
- Overall standings, men Senior Grand Masters (1957 and earlier)
- Overall standings women (1973 – 1999)
- Overall standings women Masters (1972 and earlier)
- SalzburgerLand team division (middle and long track)
Attention: All handbikers have to start with a flag at theier bike for safety reasons. The handbikes will be controlled before the start of the marathon. Without a flag at the bike, the start at the marathon is not possible.
Additive for the short track (RTF):
For the short track (RTF) there will not be a time keeping and no categories and official results. Because of that there will not be any awards ceremony and prizes for the short track.
3. Start Numbers
Each entrant must have his time keeping transponder mounted on his handlebars in accordance with race rules and for the entire duration of the Eddy Merckx Classic Bike Marathon, otherwise it will not be possible to record an individual time for the event. The advertising on the starting number cannot be covered up. After crossing the finish, the timekeeping chips must immediately be returned to the race stewards in the finish tent. There will be a 50 Euro charge for any chips which are not returned, no exceptions!!! Racers may keep their start numbers.
Important: The start number on the racer’s back must be clearly visible on the back of outer clothing no matter what the weather. This will be monitored by the executive committee as well as the race organizers. Failure to comply will result in race disqualification of the entrant in question.
4. Bike Check
Prior to the start of the marathon, bicycles will be subject to a random check for technical deficiencies and, if needs be, barred from starting the race. The bike check will occur prior to racers taking starting positions at the starting line.
5. Start / Timing
The starting gun will be fired at 8 at Fuschl am See.Starters assume their starting positions beginning one hour prior to the aforementioned starting time. The race briefing will be at 7:45 am at the respective starting block. Racers will start in several blocks. Your starting block is indicated on your start number.
6. Neutralized Start
The Eddy Merckx Classic Bike Marathon begins with a neutralized start. During a neutralized start, which is signaled by a yellow rotating light on pilot vehicles, no racer is permitted to pass these vehicles. The marathon race proper begins when green flags are waved from the pilot vehicles. During the course of the marathon, the lead riders are accompanied by pilot vehicles or by motorbike security provided by the event organizers.
7. Race Signs and Race Marshalls
The complete course of the Eddy Merckx Classic Bike Marathon is clearly signposted at important turn-offs and intersections, and above all along stages through towns. Furthermore, at important turn-offs and intersections, the organizers’ race marshals will contribute to the safety of the event. Racers must follow directions given to them by police officers as well as by race marshals. All racers are personally responsible for finding and staying on the correct course.
8. Control Points
During the marathon there are control points which each racer must pass. Starters who do not pass a control point and subsequently cross the finish line (for example, after getting lost) will receive a time penalty of 60 minutes for each control point they have missed. The event organizer reserves the right to assess shorter or longer time penalties in special circumstances.
9. Finish Line
At the finish line, each participant must ride over the contact strip on the ground. Participants who, due to exhaustion, technical defects or injury during the finish sprint of the Bike Marathon, still manage to cross the finish line riding their bike, will have their time recorded in the results list with their maximum race time plus one minute. Participants who do not reach the finish time within the prescribed time will be listed as DNF (did not finish).
10. Withdrawal from the Bike Marathon
Participants who, for whatever reason, decide to withdraw from the marathon, must notify the race organizers (race directors, start or finish officials, control points) and do so without delay. Costs which may potentially be incurred by the organizer due to failure to notify officials of withdrawal in an appropriate manner (e.g. recovery of a transponder, search measures, etc.) are borne by the participant in question. For participants who not officially notify race personnel at the start/finish line or control points, or by calling the telephone number provided, the organizer will initiate a search for the participant at said participant’s expense. Any participant who wishes to withdraw from the Eddy Merckx Classic Bike Marathon prior to finishing the race, must also notify the race office in the finish area and return the transponder.
11. The Broom Wagon
Driving behind the last rider is a race marshal’s vehicle and the “broom wagon”. The broom wagon picks up racers who have been forced to drop out of the race due to exhaustion or a technical defect, and transports them in limited numbers to the finish area. If the broom wagon is too full, the driver will attempt to organize alternate transportation. The broom wagon will tail the last rider until reaching the finish area.
The event organizers accept no liability for any damage caused to race bikes or other equipment during transportation on the broom wagon.
For different stages of the race, the organizer has stipulated specific cut-off times. If any racer fails to reach a given check point by the allotted time, the racer will be notified of this fact by the driver of the trailing marshal’s vehicle. From this point, the racer is no longer in the race. The rider can choose whether he prefers to ride to the finish line in the broom wagon or to finish the ride outside of the race framework. The rider must, however, hand his starting number and timing chip over to the driver.
12. Provisions and Drinks
Each participant is personally responsible for their own provisions and drinks during the bike marathon. The event organizer will offer fruit, energy bars, sports drinks etc. at the refreshment points, as long as supplies last. These refreshment zones are indicated in advance by distance signs. If wishing to receive provisions, each participant must give a clear hand signal, move over to the right and carefully ride into the refreshment zone, before coming to a complete stop. The event organizer cannot guarantee being able to offer provisions and/or drinks. Each participant undertakes not to leave behind any litter or to cause any potential damage to the environment.
13. Bad-Weather Gear
Each participant must bring their own rainwear and warm clothing. The event organizer will randomly inspect riders for such gear prior to the start.
14. Important Rules
The Eddy Merckx Classic Bike Marathon takes place on roads which have not been closed to traffic. Participants in this event must strictly comply with Austria’s traffic laws. Participants must ride on the far right of the road, cutting corners is not permitted. Participants must obey any instructions given to them either by the police or race marshals.
1. Helmets are required for all participants in the Eddy Merckx Classic Bike Marathon.
2. Ricers are not permitted to throw away or drop items, especially food packaging, bottles or drink cups.
3. Drivers of escort vehicles must obey Austrian rules of the road. Escort vehicles may not impede the actual race in any way.
This will be monitored by motorbike-mounted Eddy Merckx Classic Bike Marathon marshals.
4. Slower riders who are being passed must make way for the passing rider.
5. Each participant must ride cautiously in areas where visibility is impeded, be ready to apply the brakes on downhills, and be prepared to encounter oncoming traffic.
6. Once the red lights begin to flash at a railway level crossing, riders are no longer permitted to cross. No time credit is given to riders who are forced to stop at a level crossing.
7. In general, technical defects must be dealt with by participants off to the side of the road.
8. During the finish sprint, riders may not change their lanes.
9. The organizer reserves the right to break off the race or to cancel the race at any time. This situation might occur especially in the event off extremely bad weather which simultaneously represents a danger to participants. In this instance, participants have no claim to partial reimbursement of starting fees, nor do they have any right to assert claims for damages which may result.
15. Marshals, Time Penalties, Disqualification
Eddy Merckx Classic Bike Marathon marshals on motorbikes will monitor compliance with the aforementioned rules for the duration of the event. If the rider fails to comply with race rules, the marshals will give clear verbal warnings and report the incident in question to the organizers. The organizer reserves the right either to disqualify or give a time penalty to participants due to
- failure to obey the rules of the road
- pollution of the environment
- failure to comply with race rules
- significant unsportsmanlike behavior
- equipment deficiencies
The event organizer is also entitled at any time to penalize participants for transgressions not specifically mentioned or contained in the points above.
Unfortunately during the last years the topic of waste was getting more and more difficult. It is therefore expressively pointed out that it is strictly forbidden to throw away waste on the track. Please take care of this especially at the food stations. There will be enough waste cans. The marshals will take of that very strictly. Any non-compliance with this prohibition leads to disqualification directly.
17. Outside Help
Participants in the Eddy Merckx Classic Bike Marathon are not permitted to accept any outside assistance, especially pushing, towing or slip-streaming from persons or escort vehicles not participating in the bike marathon. The only exemptions to this are the offering of provisions, drinks, clothing items or spare parts by persons on the edge of the road as well as medical assistance provided by the Red Cross. Private escort vehicles within the field of participants are prohibited and will lead to disqualification.
17. Protest and Jury
In the event of rules violations by other participants or in the face of an adverse decision by the race directors, each participant has the right to submit a protest with a listing of witnesses at the race office up to one hour after crossing the finish line. A 3-person jury (race director, organizational director, head timekeeper) will evaluate the protest without delay and make their decision before the medals ceremony. The protest charge is 50 Euro. If the protest is rejected, the protest fee will be retained by the race organizer.
Each participant is responsible for his own safety and expressly declares that he is covered by insurance from a recognized insurance carrier in Austria for legal liability for damages to persons or property, and in an amount appropriate to events such as this. The event organizers, race management and sponsors accept no liability whatsoever for damages and injuries suffered or caused by participants. A condition of participation is the participant’s acknowledgement that he is solely responsible for coping with dangers to his person or property within the framework of the event, and that he will not assert any claims or demands upon persons, institutions or businesses who are staging or have staged the event.
